RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is currently investigating a series of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses reported in individuals who visited the Lake Anna area over the Memorial Day weekend. Several of the affected individuals have been diagnosed with Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections.

Symptoms and Impact of E. coli

E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody), vomiting, fever, and chills. In some severe cases, E. coli can lead to organ damage, particularly to the kidneys, potentially resulting in hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Current Investigation and Findings

The VDH has received numerous reports of GI illnesses, predominantly in children, exhibiting these symptoms. Some cases have required hospitalization, and clinical evaluation and treatment are ongoing. The investigation is exploring all potential sources of the illness, including exposure to lake water and food.

Dr. Olugbenga O. Obasanjo, Health Director of the Rappahannock Health District, expressed hope for the recovery of those hospitalized. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and further information will emerge in the coming days.

 Lake Water Testing

While all affected individuals reported swimming or other water activities in Lake Anna, there is not yet sufficient evidence to confirm that the lake water is the source of the illnesses. VDH is conducting water tests to assess bacteria levels and determine if there is a public health risk.

It is important to note that the illnesses are not suspected to be related to Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), as E. coli is not associated with these blooms. Although there are indications of typical algae activity for this time of year, no ongoing HAB event has been reported. A HAB status update for Lake Anna is expected the week of June 10.

Precautionary Measures

Due to the ongoing investigation, VDH has not issued a formal swimming advisory but encourages caution. Dr. Obasanjo advises swimmers to take preventive measures to avoid illness:

– Shower before and after swimming.
– Wash hands before eating.
– Avoid drinking lake water.
– Refrain from swimming if experiencing diarrhea.
– Monitor children closely to ensure they follow these precautions.

General Swimming and Boating Safety Tips

To prevent illness while swimming and boating in natural waters, follow these guidelines:

– Never drink untreated water.
– Avoid swimming if you have open wounds.
– Wash hands after bathroom use and before preparing or eating food.
– Stay clear of storm drains.
– Do not swim if experiencing vomiting or diarrhea.
– Avoid waters with a green film, as this may indicate harmful algae.
– Shower after swimming to remove germs and contaminants.
– Avoid swimming for three days after heavy rain.
– Properly dispose of human waste from boats at designated marinas.

Reporting Illness

If you visited the Lake Anna area over Memorial Day weekend or afterward and experienced GI symptoms, please contact your local health department. Seek medical care if symptoms persist.

VDH will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. To maintain patient privacy, specific details about the affected individuals will not be disclosed.
