Northern Virginia Bridge Players Unite for a Cause

The event began with bridge players from all over Northern Virginia gathering at the local community center. Each player had donated a small fee to enter, and all of the proceeds went directly to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The day was filled with friendly competition, as bridge players battled it out in several rounds of the card game. Throughout the day, participants shared stories of their experiences with Alzheimer’s Disease, while also learning more about the organization and how they can help.

At the end of the tournament, the bridge players had raised an impressive amount of money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Furthermore, they had spread awareness of the disease and the organization in the Northern Virginia area.

The bridge playing event was a huge success, and its participants are looking forward to making an even bigger impact next year. Northern Virginia bridge players are determined to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.

Combining Two Passions: Bridge and Raising Awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease

The Northern Virginia Bridge Association proudly hosted a gathering at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Arlington, combining two passions – bridge and raising awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease – on the Summer Solstice, also known as the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Longest Day” campaign. The association chose bridge due to its social and cognitive skills requirements and the day of the year with the most light to demonstrate their fight against the darkness of Alzheimer’s.

Dozens of people stopped in throughout the morning, including Bridge Heroes 2023 team captain Kevin O’Brien who shared his enthusiasm for the game. “It’s fun, it’s a challenge,” O’Brien said. “Some people think the social aspects and the mental exercise of bridge helps to delay or fight against dementia.” So far, the Northern Virginia Bridge Association has raised $10,000 and counting for the campaign, as well as nearly $9 million over the last 11 years – an impressive feat that demonstrates their commitment to supporting those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

Medical researchers have also found that playing crossword puzzles and word games for about 20 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
