Having been a Mount Healthy, Ohio resident – one of America’s most prominent abolitionist communities – Duncanson generously donated paintings supporting the Underground Railroad and is believed to have housed runaway slaves in his home. His dedication to freedom drove him on a daring journey across the South, where he captured stunning landscapes and historically significant sites. The exhibition showcases Duncanson’s awe-inspiring paintings, which often tell the stories of escaped enslaved people and utilize the symbolism of the Underground Railroad. One of his most monumental works, “Lookout Mountain Crossing the Tennessee River at Chattanooga,” was inspired by Jacob Cummings’ courageous walk to freedom from Chattanooga, Tennessee – complete with remarkable attention to detail, featuring landmarks and imagery from Cummings’ account of his escape.
