You just applied for a mortgage and now your phone won’t stop ringing, you’re getting spam texts and it seems like there are 50 lenders and banks trying to sell you a mortgage.

Why did your mortgage lender sell your information?????

They DIDN’T. THE CREDIT BUREAUS DID!!

That’s right folks, the credit bureaus engage in a business called Trigger Leads, where they sell YOUR information to marketing companies who then bombard you with phone calls and texts. How can this practice be legal, you may ask?

The credit bureaus, only sell public information, such as your name, phone number and address. However, there is a current bill inthe house of representatives trying to block this practice and one can hope that this will soon become illegal.

Here is some information that may help you thwart these pests from bothering you.

  1. Register your phone number on the ‘Do Not Call’ registry here www.donotcall.gov this can help reduce the number of spam calls you may receive.
  2. Be skeptical of unsolicited offers. Offers for additional mortgage protection insurance, home warranties, and especially those asking for additional fees related to your mortgage or deed are often unnecessary and, at times, fraudulent.
