Dive into a realm of history, tradition, and community spirit at the iconic Stafford County Fair. The fair, a beacon of the county’s history, took root on October 21, 1922. Organized by the diligent School Board and the indefatigable officers of the Fair – W.D Peyton, James Ashby, and V.B Perry, it initially took center stage at Stafford High School.
The tradition of the school parade from Stafford High School to the Courthouse set the tone in its inaugural year. Over time, the fair has showcased some of the best agricultural exhibits, with commendable mentions from the likes of R.L. Reid, Hayden Silver, and Grafton Greenlaw. While droughts and wars may have paused the festivities, the indomitable spirit of Stafford County always found its way back.
After a hiatus of over five decades since Stafford celebrated its own fair, the fall of 2010 marked its triumphant return thanks to Gordon Shelton. The initial years saw the grounds of Mountain View High School bursting with activities, but soon the location shifted to cater to the growing list of attractions, from demolition derbies and tractor pulls to music concerts and a Miss Stafford County Pageant.
Today, as a thriving non-profit, volunteer organization, the fair seeks a permanent ground to continue its mission. A mission of not only promoting agriculture but of also cultivating community ties, celebrating family moments, and ensuring unparalleled entertainment. Whether you’re drawn to the carnival rides, fascinated by homemaking contests, or simply looking to soak in the delightful vibes, the Stafford County Fair has something for everyone.
Additionally, the fair has taken on a safety initiative, providing Fire & Rescue teams an opportunity to showcase and train in life-saving techniques, notably with the Jaws of Life.
However, the festivities don’t end with the fair. The Stafford County Christmas Parade, beginning in 2015 in honor of Sheriff Charlie Jett and Clerk of the Court Barbara Decatur, promises a spectacle every December.
Gordon Shelton, now not just the Fair and Parade Manager but also a proud member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Association of Fairs, invites you to be a part of this grand legacy.
