Here’s a look at three items from Friday, Oct. 30: a tech-led stock market slide to close out October, new attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, and a Fredericksburg discussion about where future marijuana shops could open.
The Economy
U.S. stocks fell sharply Friday as investors questioned whether heavy spending by big technology companies on artificial intelligence will pay off. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% to 25,437, the S&P 500 dropped 1.82% and the Dow lost 1.09%, or 572 points, Reuters reported.
Shares of Intel plunged 28.6% and Amazon fell 1.4% after results showed both burning through cash while investing heavily in AI, according to Reuters. The PHLX semiconductor index closed down more than 7%, its biggest daily drop since late June.
Investors moved toward U.S. government bonds, pushing the 10-year Treasury yield down to about 4.93%, CNBC reported. Investors are now looking ahead to the October jobs report, due next Friday.
World
A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was disabled Thursday after a small boat attached two limpet mines to its hull, causing an engine-room fire, maritime security sources told Reuters. The British navy’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said the crew was safe, the fire was out and the vessel was continuing to its next port. Reuters said it was not immediately clear who carried out the attack.
Separately, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said Friday that four oil tankers caught fire and exploded while using what it called unauthorized routes through the strait, including vessels carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude that it said hit mines, according to Reuters, which said it could not immediately verify the statement.
The strait is one of the world’s most important routes for oil exports. Brent crude settled up 2.4% at $117.63 a barrel Friday, a six-month high, Reuters reported.
Around Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg City Council is weighing how far recreational marijuana stores should be kept from schools, child care programs and similar sites, the Fredericksburg Free Press reported. State rules set a 1,000-foot buffer, which localities may reduce but not increase.
At an Oct. 27 work session, city planning staff said the full buffer could rule out much of downtown and outlined options including a 500-foot citywide distance. Council members also discussed security rules and storefront appearance. No ordinance was adopted.
The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority plans to open its first license applications by Feb. 1, 2027, with retail sales scheduled to begin July 1, 2027.
On the field, Chancellor beat Courtland 2-0 Thursday for the Region 4C field hockey title, and both teams advance to the state quarterfinals. In cross country, the Colonial Forge girls and Riverbend boys won region championships Thursday, the Free Press reported.
