Here’s a look at three items from Wednesday, Oct. 28: the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision, Israel’s too-close-to-call election, and a batch of business openings and changes around Fredericksburg.

The Economy

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark federal funds rate in a target range of 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, according to the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement. The vote was 10 to 2. Committee members Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissented, preferring to raise the range by a quarter percentage point.

The statement said economic activity is “expanding at a strong pace” and that “inflation remains elevated,” adding that more information will help the committee decide its next step. CNBC reported that the rate has been in this range since the Fed approved a quarter-point increase in September. In his news conference, Chairman Kevin Warsh said one of the committee’s 2027 meetings will focus only on broader policy strategy, with no rate vote expected at that meeting.

The federal funds rate affects what banks charge one another to borrow overnight, and changes to it can ripple into rates on credit cards, auto loans and other consumer borrowing.

World

Israel’s parliamentary election did not produce a clear winner, according to partial results. The BBC reported that with about 85% of ballots counted, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and its allies were on track for 53 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, while former military chief Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc was set for 48. A governing majority requires 61 seats.

Arab-led parties were on course for 19 seats, the BBC reported, though most of the Jewish parties have said they will not work with them. Both Netanyahu and Eisenkot have said they will try to form a coalition.

Between 430,000 and 480,000 absentee ballots, including those of soldiers, diplomats and hospital patients, had not yet been counted. Israel’s Central Elections Committee expected that count to finish by Thursday evening, according to The Guardian. Once results are final, President Isaac Herzog will consult with the parties and choose a leader to try to form a government, a process the BBC said could take weeks.
