RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is currently investigating a series of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses reported in individuals who visited the Lake Anna area over the Memorial Day weekend. Several of the affected individuals have been diagnosed with Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections.
Symptoms and Impact of E. coli
E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody), vomiting, fever, and chills. In some severe cases, E. coli can lead to organ damage, particularly to the kidneys, potentially resulting in hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
Current Investigation and Findings
The VDH has received numerous reports of GI illnesses, predominantly in children, exhibiting these symptoms. Some cases have required hospitalization, and clinical evaluation and treatment are ongoing. The investigation is exploring all potential sources of the illness, including exposure to lake water and food.
