Friday, 10/06, marked a crucial milestone for young Anthony Wharton. With collective hopes and prayers, Anthony successfully navigated his first surgery, which aimed to reroute the blood flow away from the tumor, without any complications. He remained under careful watch in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children’s Hospital Utah.
As Monday, 10/09 dawned, Anthony underwent further CT scans, all of which indicated positive outcomes. However, today is a monumental day for Anthony, as he faces another intensive surgery, scheduled to span between 6 to 10 hours. This surgery’s primary objective is the removal of the tumor situated at the base of his skull, a medical anomaly that has led to the disintegration of several of his neck vertebrae. Depending on the surgery’s progression and the surgeon’s assessment, there is also a possibility of placing the rods during this procedure. Following this, Anthony will remain sedated in the ICU in anticipation of his subsequent surgery on Wednesday.
The intricacy of this medical challenge cannot be understated. The lesion’s location and the risks tied to the operation are so unique that Children’s Hospital Utah remains the sole institution willing to undertake this surgery.
As Anthony showcases unwavering courage, his family remains by his side, sharing in the anxieties and hopes of each moment.
