With increasing travel out of the US, the number of passport applications has skyrocketed as Americans look to satisfy their wanderlust. This leap in demand has been a slight challenge for travelers, including Springfield gentleman Mr. Gonzalez, but the State Department is doing its best to ensure speedy processing. Nana-Sentuo Bonsu recently spoke to the man ahead of his summer trip to Norway and France to experience the weight of expectations placed on passports today.

The demand for passports is at an all-time high as millions of Americans look forward to traveling overseas this season. Hundreds of thousands are still waiting for their passports, including a Springfield man who is eagerly awaiting his son’s passport in time for the summer season. FOX 5 reporter Nana-Sentuo Bonsu spoke to the man about his experience.
Unprecedented Demand for Passports
1. 400,000 Applications per Week: The State Department has reported an unprecedented surge in passport applications, with over 400,000 applications received each week.
2. Long Wait Times: Despite the overwhelming demand for passports, many Americans are still eagerly awaiting their documents to be approved and sent out. For some, the wait could mean missing out on travel plans.
3. Prioritizing Efficiency: The State Department is doing its best to ensure that all passport requests are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The State Department has reported an unprecedented surge in passport applications, with over 400,000 applications received each week. Despite the overwhelming demand for passports, many Americans are still eagerly awaiting their documents to be approved and sent out. For some, the wait could mean missing out on travel plans; however, the State Department is doing its best to ensure that all passport requests are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Mr. Gonzalez is just one of many hopeful travelers, and despite the wait, his enthusiasm for his upcoming trip to Norway and France remains strong.
The State Department is currently experiencing “higher-than-normal volumes” of passport applications, with over 500,000 applications being received from January to March. As international travel picks up, the department has issued nearly 22 million passports in 2022 and is on track to break that record for Fiscal Year 2023, due to the “unprecedented demand for passports”. Despite the wait, Mr. Gonzalez remains hopeful, as he has already paid for tickets, hotels, and other necessary items for the trip.
He has taken the extra step to contact his representatives, Congressman Gerry Connolly and Senator Mark Warner, to see what they can do in order to expedite the process. Senator Warner expressed his pride for his team’s work in a statement to FOX 5: “I’m proud to oversee a casework team that works diligently and effectively to assist Virginians who need a passport and find themselves in a pinch – whether that be because of a last-minute trip, or because of the considerable processing delays we’ve seen in recent months.” Mr. Gonzalez is determined to make his trip and is eager to see what results his representatives can bring.
The State Department is proud to announce that staffing levels have increased significantly, and they will continue to hire more staff. From the beginning of the year to mid-June, they authorized over 150,000 hours of overtime to ensure that passports were shipped out on time. Thanks to their commitment, they do not anticipate needing to extend processing times in 2023. For more information regarding the status of your passport application, visit passportstatus.state.gov.
The State Department is doing its best to ensure that all passport requests are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible, but the overwhelming demand for passports has created delays and disappointment for some hopeful travelers who still anticipate their documents in offseason. Nevertheless, with guidance and advice available from qualified professionals, it is possible for individuals to get in front of delays and avoid missing out on important travel plans. Despite a lengthy wait, Mr. Gonzalez remains hopeful that his son’s passport will arrive in time for the summer exploration of Norway and France.
