Mark your calendars for an extraordinary journey back in time! The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) invites homeschooling families to join their popular Homeschool Historians program on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, for a special “Dinosaur Discoveries” adventure. This educational event focuses on the fascinating fossilized dinosaur tracks found right here in Fredericksburg, dating back an astounding 112 million years. Young explorers will have the opportunity to step into the role of paleontologists while learning about the prehistoric creatures that once roamed our local landscape.
The museum is offering two sessions to accommodate different schedules: a morning session from 10:00-11:30 AM (already sold out due to high demand) and an afternoon session from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM, which still has spots available for purchase. Priced affordably at just $5 per person for both children and adults, this event makes quality educational experiences accessible to homeschooling families. Registration is required and can be completed through the museum’s website. Don’t delay securing your spots, as these specialized educational programs typically fill quickly!
During the Dinosaur Discoveries session, children will transform into junior paleontologists through engaging hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. Participants will examine authentic local fossilized dinosaur tracks, learn excavation techniques, create fossil casts, and piece together clues about the massive creatures that left their imprints in what is now Fredericksburg. The program seamlessly blends science, history, and interactive learning to create a memorable educational experience that brings the distant past to life.
All activities are thoughtfully designed to be age-appropriate, catering to children from preschool through 5th grade with different complexity levels to challenge children of various ages. The museum’s experienced education staff has crafted a program that meets educational standards while keeping the experience fun and engaging. Children will leave with not only newfound knowledge about dinosaurs and paleontology but also tangible creations to continue the learning conversation at home.
The Homeschool Historians program welcomes children of preschool through 5th-grade age, with activities tailored to be appropriate and engaging for this range of developmental stages. For safety and educational support, all children must be accompanied by an adult (18 or older) throughout the duration of the program. Please note that everyone over the age of three requires a ticket, including accompanying adults, as this helps the museum maintain appropriate ratios and cover program costs.
Families should be aware that the museum documents its programs through photography and video for promotional purposes. If you prefer not to be included in these materials, simply notify a staff member at the event. For any additional questions about the program content, registration process, or special accommodations, families are encouraged to contact Theresa Cramer, the museum’s Education Manager, directly at tcramer@famva.org. With her extensive background in museum education, Ms. Cramer is dedicated to ensuring all participants have an enriching and enjoyable experience.
