Trump announces Hormuz mission as Iran tensions rise
President Donald Trump announced a naval mission called Project Freedom to help ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, with the operation starting Monday. The strait, through which about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass, remains under a de facto Iranian blockade after Iran took control of it in the days after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.
Iran's military warned that any foreign armed force attempting to enter the strait would be attacked. Iran also said it received a United States response to its latest peace proposal after Trump called Tehran's proposal unacceptable.
Separately, the United States military's Central Command announced Saturday that it has established a new task force, Task Force Iron Gate, to block Iran's land-based supply routes, expanding its months-long naval blockade of Iranian ports. The task force is based in Tampa, Florida. Central Command also said it disabled a commercial cargo vessel, the St. Kitts-flagged M/V Huda, in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday as part of the blockade.
Iran's official news agency reported explosions Saturday on Qeshm Island in the strait, as well as in the cities of Jask, Sirik and Bandar Abbas. Trump confirmed new strikes on Qeshm Island a day earlier but described them as minor, adding that Tehran still wants a deal as Qatari-mediated talks continue. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy reported that two oil tankers struck mines near the strait on Saturday and suffered severe damage.
Brown responds to ruling that ended St. Michael's season
St. Michael head coach Hugh Brown released a statement to fredericksburg.com regarding the ruling by the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association, according to FLS Varsity. VISAA determined that St. Michael did not meet its code of conduct and sportsmanship expectations after Friday night's game, making the Warriors ineligible for the playoffs for the rest of the season.
Brown described the decision as very disappointing for his seniors and players who invested heavily in the season. He acknowledged that actions have consequences and that the program needs to improve, while arguing that the players deserve better protection and that personal fouls should not go unpunished.
